FIG Newsletter – February/March 2018

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to the February/March issue of FIG Newsletter. If you have not already registered for the FIG Congress 2018 it is still possible. The first draft of the technical programme has just been published, and you are invited to an exciting four-day programme filled with technical sessions, networking opportunities and a great adventure. In this issue you will also find the invitation to the General Assembly.
I also have to give a sincere apology to the local organisers of the FIG Working Week 2019 in Vietnam. In the last issue of the Newsletter I managed to include an embarassing typo mistake... I managed to write that the Working Week is NOT taking shape - of course I meant that the Working Week is NOW taking shape. And I am convinced that it will be a wonderful and exciting experience in Hanoi. However, first of all find a warm invitation to the beautiful city of Istanbul and to FIG Congress 2018 which is coming up very soon.

The lively Istanbul city center - a city that never sleeps

Istanbul Congress Center is situated in the city centre of Istanbul

There are many hotels nearby the Istanbul Congress Center and it is located near the famous Taksim Square

The Congress is organised by FIG and the Turkish Chamber of Survey and Cadaster Engineers (CSCE) and will take place 6 – 11 May 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey.

We are certain that Istanbul will exceed in meeting all requirements and expectations for a memorable and successful Congress. This geographical area has not hosted any FIG Congress and General Assembly before. Istanbul is one of the most impressive and attractive cities at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where unique beauties of the West and the East come together.

The overall theme of the large 4-year Congress is:
Embracing our smart world where the continents connect: enhancing the geospatial  maturity of societies

The four day conference will offer an exciting and variated choice of technical sessions, technical tours and of course also the opportunity to explore the wonderful city and surroundings of Istanbul as well as the famous Turkish hospitality. The technical programme is now taking shape and is an exciting mixture of sessions composed from the open call for papers, special sessions, sessions organised jointly with our partners such as UN-Habitat/GLTN and FAO and of course the highligh of each day, the plenary sessions. The plenary sessions cover the following areas:

  • Urban development
  • Modern technology usage for our profession
  • Rural development
  • Spatially enabled societies

The first draft of the technical programme has been published: http://fig.net/fig2018/technical_program.htm
